What Is the Best Option for Plastic Waste Management? 1

Usually the fundamental management answer is : simply waste less.A more comprehensive answer depends on several factors(importance not necessarily in this order):what specific kind of waste is it,location [of the waste] in the value stream [post consumer/industrial/etc],transportation costs, disposal costs, energy costs. In order to ascertain the best management strategy a significantly more detailed question needs to be asked and more cost factors provided. What is the best option for plastic waste management?

Catalytic Pyrolysis of Plastic Waste: Moving Toward Pyrolysis Based Biorefineries

PE and PET showed a two-stage decomposition process; the initial degradation started at lower temperatures followed by the other degradation stage at a higher temperature. PEs initial degradation started at 270°C and propagated slowly but gradually until the temperature reached 385°C. After that temperature, a sharp degradation was observed, and 95% degradation was achieved with a further increase of around 100°C. A similar two-stage degradation pattern was observed for PET plastic and the initial degradation started at 400°C with a sharp decrease in weight loss. However, the second degradation started at a slightly higher temperature (550°C). The initial degradation of PE and PET may be due to the presence of some volatile impurities such as the additive filler used during plastic synthesis (Dimitrov et al., 2013).

Why All of Us Should Finally Stop Using Plastic Straws?

More and more countries or large retailers are banning plastic straws. Unfortunately bans alone wo not change much, what we need is a global social movement. Luckily, plastic straws are quickly becoming a dining taboo, here's why:Less than 9% of all of the plastic we use every day gets recycled.Instead, most end up in landfills or worst case scenario: in the ocean. That problem wo not be fixed by saying 'no' to plastic straws, but from what environmentalists say letting go of a single piece of plastic could be the first step in a much-needed larger behavioral change. In September, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a first-of-its-kind bill aimed at reducing straw waste in the state. Starting in 2019, sit-down restaurants in the Golden State wo not serve any drinks with straws, unless customers ask for them. California recently became the first state to nix plastic straws from restaurant tables. Starting in 2019, customers in that state will have to ask if they want to use a straw. Plastic straw bans are going into effect around the US, UK, and the European Union who both have their own plastic ban proposals in the works. Corporate bans are also quickly gaining momentum as large companies like Aramark, American Airlines and Starbucks are vowing to stop offering plastic straws. Starbucks has decided to get its iconic green sippers completely off store shelves by 2020, while Seattle banned all plastic utensils, including straws, from bars and businesses city-wide in July. The truth is that straws are just the tip of the trash heap when it comes to plastic waste. At the same time the fight's got to start somewhere. Because plastics have been designed to be used for a very short amount of time, and then be tossed away, banning straws become a symbol of a larger movement.Want to know more? Here's how to keep your razors from contributing to landfill waste

Here's how to keep your razors from contributing to landfill waste NEW YORK - How bad is your disposable razor for the environment? The question is gaining attention among consumers amid a growing global campaign against plastic waste, with cities and countries introducing bans on single-use plastic bags and straws. Do not worry, there's no talk of banning your razor, which is not exactly single use. Still, billions of plastic razors and refill blade cartridges get tossed in landfills each year. Municipal recycling programs in the U.S. will not accept them because they are sharp objects made of mixed materials. What can be done? Well, there are no perfectly convenient options, aside from foregoing shaving altogether. For those concerned about an eco-friendlier shave, here are some things to know. Crack open a cold one: PepsiCo testing canned water to cut down plastic use Opinion: Recycling can really pay off The Environmental Protection Agency once estimated that 2 billion razors and refill blades get tossed out in the U.S. each year. That figure is widely cited by recycling advocates and startups marketing eco-friendly razors. Gillette, the world's leading razor brand, also cites the number on a website detailing a new recycling program for razors launched earlier this year. But the figure appears to date back to an EPA campaign from the late 1980s against a national "garbage crisis." A 1990 "Environmental Consumer's Handbook" on the EPA's website says the U.S. produces "2 billion throwaway razors and blades" each year. The EPA now says it does not track the impact of disposable razors on the environment and has no update on the figure. It's likely even higher. Last year, more than $1.2 billion in disposable razors were sold in the U.S, according to market research firm Euromonitor. Prices vary widely but many disposables are less than $1 each. How to recycle your razors There are few options for recycling razors. The French company BIC started a razor recycling program in France a few years ago that did not last. Now, Gillette is trying out a similar idea in the U.S. in partnership with Terracycle, an organization that specializes in hard-to-recycle waste. All brands of razors are accepted. The easiest option is mailing the razors to Terracycle, but the shipping costs are on you. At no cost, you can deliver razors to drop-off centers on Terracycle's interactive map. But with only 200 locations so far, the option is not practical for many. (There's only one site so far in California, and six in Florida.) Stephanie Moses, an account director for Terracycle, said the program is growing quickly, and the map will be updated to show 350 locations by mid-August. Man accidentally throws away $23K: Somehow recovers it at a recycling facility The comeback of the double-edged safety razors Remember the old-school safety razor your grandfather used? It's making a comeback. Trendy direct-to-consumer brands have reintroduced them to younger generations, most prominently Bevel, the grooming lined aimed at black men, and Oui Shave, one of the few safety razor brands aimed at women. Safety razors are built to last, usually made of materials like steel or chrome. The only waste is the steel blades, and some municipalities recycle them. Oui founder Karen Young said she's developing a map for her site to show which ones. Newcomer brand Leaf Shave allows customers to mail back their blades in a custom-made tin box for recycling. The tricky thing is that safety razors come with a higher upfront cost, ranging anywhere from $15 to more than $200 depending on the brand. However, the refill blades are cheap, as low as 20 cents each, compared to $2 for the average modern cartridge. You can familiarize yourself with established brands through long-time retailers like GroomingLounge.com and The Art of Shaving. Michael Gilman, founder of GroomingLounge.com, said safety razors are a small but fast-growing part of his business, with blade sales tripling in the past year. Beginners should go for the lower-priced razors and look for closed-comb design and weighted handles, he said. If you are looking to try one out, however, most of the newer digital brands offer 30-day returns, regardless of whether the razor is used. Are there other eco-friendly options? Safety razors are not made for rushed morning routines. And frequent fliers be warned: you can not throw the blades into your carry-on luggage. The Transportation Safety Administration wrote a blog post about it after finding that "they are making a comeback thanks to the close shave they provide and the extremely affordable price of the replacement blades." If it's not for you, at least switching to a cartridge with a reusable handle reduces the waste. Already, that is the more popular option among U.S. men, according to Euromonitor figures, though women in the U.S. still spend more money on fully disposable plastic razors.

Illegal Plastic Waste Processing
Illegal Plastic Waste Processing
Illegal plastic waste processingIn the months following China's January 2018 banning of nearly all plastic waste imports, around 40 factories sprung up around Jenjoram to take up some of the business. Often hidden in the local palm oil plantations, 90 percent had no permits, as Malaysia suddenly became one of the world's biggest plastic importers. In many cases, existing Chinese waste processing businesses relocated to Jenjarom, attracted by its proximity to Port Klang - Malaysia's largest port and the entry point for most of its plastic imports - together with the cultural fit of the town's Chinese business population, and allegedly corruptible officials. Unrecyclable plastics should be sent to waste centres but Jenjarom's illegal operations simply burned them, releasing poisonous and carcinogenic fumes into the atmosphere, causing respiratory complaints and skin rashes among local people. Several local fish and prawn business lost all their stock, apparently due to toxic wastewater from the factories. When 33 of the plants were closed down, more than 17,000 tonnes of the waste was left behind as an unresolved problem for authorities. Most of the operations quickly reopened nearby.— — — — — —Waste Processing FacilitiesThe first municipal waste processing plant in Kazakhstan was opened in December 2007 in Almaty with support of local akimat. Vtorma-Ecology Plant covered 90% of the city's utilization of municipal solid waste (MSW). At that time Almaty accumulated about 600 tons of garbage per year. During 4.5-5 years, the company was to pay back $28 million investments and reach cost recovery by producing secondary materials - PET flex, plastic pellets, paper, ferrous and non-ferrous metals. But to the economic crisis the price of recyclables has fallen in 1,5-3 times, and the plant was not able to cover its costs and pay the loan, issued by "KazKom Bank". In October 2010 the plant was mothballed, criminal case of non-payment the wages was opened on Rustem Parmanbekov, director of the plant, and environmental prosecutor's office estimated the environmental damage in the amount of 7 million tenge. In September 2012 Agency for Construction, Housing and Utilities of RK has presented the Program of construction of 41 waste processing plants around Kazakhstan within 10-15 years. Particularly, the Agency plans to open 10 plants until 2015. As the Agency informs, the pilot projects will be launched in Aktobe, Atyrau, Karaganda, Abai, Saran, Shakhtinsk, Kostanay, Pavlodar, Taldykorgan, Taraz, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kokshetau, etc. These efforts will allow developing specific mechanisms of solid waste management in Kazakhstan and providing investors with one more sphere for investments. First of the objects within the Program is Astana Waste Processing Plant, which was planned to open in October 2012 and cover all city needs in MSW utilization, with its productivity of 400,000 tons per year. The opening ceremony was held on December 24, 2012. This is the second waste processing plant in Kazakhstan after Almaty plant. The Astana plant was built on basis of Spanish technology. As regards to Almaty Plant, which is still not operating, the Agency claims that owners have to deal with their economic problems themselves. The Program also covers Shymkent city, which has a dramatic situation with spontaneously growing dump close to residential areas of the city. For residents of these neighborhoods proximity to the dump has turned into serious health problems. Due to constant acrid smoke and smell of burning people get such diseases as asthma, bronchitis etc. The plant in Shymkent was planned to be built in 2007: "Construction is scheduled to start next spring and finish by fall," - declared the subcontractor in January 2007. But the choice of the landfill and other issues took more time than planned. Only in December 2009 an investment agreement with Shymkent Akimat was signed and area for polygon and plant was defined. In Fall 2011 it was again announced that construction of the plant begins. Municipal budget allocated 430 million tenge for the necessary infrastructure needs. Until the end of the year builders acquired approximately 20 million tenge. But in April 2012, Akimat refused to continue funding the project. For the moment the project is still frozen. Operation of the plant is now under threat due to insufficient funds for restoration and permanent increase of the area of garbage dump. The Agency for Construction, Housing and Utilities of RK has also named the city of Pavlodar among the first cities, where the plants will be built until 2015. For the moment, Pavlodar Akimat has announced that they have already chosen the place of 100 hectares for the construction of polygon. Work is expected to deploy on the existing city dump. Another plant is planned to be constructed in Karaganda. By today, "Taza Dala" company was founded to manage this project, places for construction and polygon have been chosen. Now there are negotiations being held with several banks to participate in the project. Finally, in December 2012 it was announced that the modern MSW processing plant will be built in Aktau with support of EBRD: 2.4 billion tenge (€12.7 million equivalent) loan to State Communal Enterprise Koktem, Aktau's waste management company, will co-finance the new integrated mechanical-biological treatment facility and a new sanitary landfill. The project will be co-financed by the Clean Technology Fund which is providing an US$8 million loan. The project will also be supported by a capital grant from the state budget. The Korean Donor Fund provided nearly €300,000 and the EBRDShareholder Special Fund is providing grants of nearly €800,000 for project management, design, engineering, training, operational improvements and other associated spending.
8 Tips for a Plastic Free Lifestyle
8 Tips for a Plastic Free Lifestyle
8 tips for a plastic free lifestylePlastic is one of most used products everyday. It became an industry favorite since the 50ies as it is cheap to produce and can be molded into different forms. The main problem of plastic for the environment is that less than 10% gets recycled. The rest is thrown away. According to The Independent: "…more than eight million tonnes going into the oceans every year, it is estimated there will be more plastic than fish by 2050 and 99 per cent of all the seabirds on the planet will have consumed some. It is thought the sea now contains some 51 trillion microplastic particles — 500 times more than stars in our galaxy…."So it is finally time to adapt to a more eco friendly lifestyle and become plastic free in some parts of our lives. We show you how you can easily contribute towards the environment with these 8 simple tips:No plastic strawsIt is only the tip of the iceberg but it is a fact, that in most of the cases plastic straws are used once and then thrown away. So next time you are at a restaurant or in a bar say no to the straw.Reusable bagsInstead of getting a plastic bag everytime when you go shopping, take a stylish resuable bag with you. They are foldable and fit perfectly in all of your favorite bags. Check out our blog posts about 4 stylish tote bag brands you need in your life.Buy Glass instead of plasticSounds easy right? Sometimes it might be harder though. However, whenever you go shopping make sure you buy most of the products in glass containers rather than plastic ones or cans as hot dogs, pickles, tomatoe sauces, water, soft drinks etc.Chewing GumYou might wonder why we mention this here. Yes, of course chewing gum usally comes in plastic packaging. However, did you actually know that chewing gum consists mainly out of plastic ingredients? It is possible to recycle the gum, however you are actually chewing plastic which might cause health issues in the long run. Therefore rather just skip it or choose a natural alternative. No plastic bottlesThis is tricky but possible. From now on when you go to the supermarket check if you can buy your drinks in glass bottles instead. If not you could filter your tab water and drink it and save money in the long run. In most of the countries this is no problem. When you go to the gym or on a trip use a refillable bottle instead a plastic one.Use matchesYou might wonder why we mention it here, but most of the lighters used are usally made out of plastic. So better being old school with matches instead. Use tupperware and lunch boxesInstead of ordering in or buying pre-packed lunch food start to prepare your own lunches. It will save you money, will be healthier and you can avoid plastic waste by using stylish lunchboxes.Reusable coffeecupsYou love to drink coffee but most times you do it on the go? Remember all the coffee cups you used and then threw away? You can save the environment by taking your own coffee cup with you. Read our blog post about 7 stylish reusable coffee cups and you wo not want to live without them anymore.Ice CubesNo worries, we wo not tell you to avoid ice cubes but how do you actually make them? If you use plastic ice cube foil or plastic ice cube trays it is time to swap them to stainless steel ones. It is that easy! You like what you are reading? Most of the plastic items are single used plastic products such as plastic bottles, carry bags, disposable plates & glasses, packaging items, etc. This single-use plastic only increases the count of plastic waste, causing harmful effects to humanity, animals, and the environment as well. The use of single-use plastic may minimize our efforts but, unfortunately increasing the risk factor a lot by causing plastic pollution.
Bleeding for the Environment
Bleeding for the Environment
Bleeding for the environmentAbout a year ago I switched over from using a plastic toothbrush to a bamboo one; one less plastic brush among the 3.6 billion we produce each year. It was, I know, a small, rather pathetic gesture in my fight to save the planet. That, combined with composting, recycling and purchasing most of my clothes second hand, makes up almost the sum total of my war effort. We are constantly bombarded with disheartening statistics and reports as to just how badly we are doing as custodians of planet earth. Plastic waste, species extinction, deforestation and global weather change are just some of the man-made disasters that are occurring on our watch, and which continue to occur at an ever increasing rate. It is tempting, when exposed to such devastation, to throw our hands up in despair and abandon hope, or action. After all, not all of us can jump onto the Sea Sheppard and defend whales in the Southern Ocean or join an anti-poaching team tracking rhino poachers in some dusty African state. The people who should be leading this fight are the politicians. They were all, when we elected them, paying loud lip service to the cause. Having wheedled a vote out of us, they invariably seem to move onto other priorities, while the survival of the planet gets kicked into the long grass. One of the great failings of democracy is that it seems to favour short term thinking over long term reality.Faced with so much political inaction, my pathetic little gestures suddenly do not seem quite so pathetic, if I can only persuade others to join me. I recently decided to up the ante in the plastic conflict. Concerned at the amount of plastic waste I was generating, I decided to do away with the plastic disposable razors I had been using. Instead, I turned back to the all metal safety razor of my youth. Safety razor, I should point out, is a misnomer that ranks right up there with starfish, which is not a fish at all, and Paris's Pont Neuf, or new bridge, which is the oldest bridge in the city. The safety razor is not for the faint hearted. Its use demands the sort of attention to detail that one would expect from a brain surgeon or NASA scientist. It is, however, made entirely of recyclable parts and therefore poses less threat to our oceans than its more user friendly plastic equivalent. True, your paper usage increases slightly as you try to stem the blood flow with tiny tissue compresses, but I still think the environmental benefits outweigh the losses. I am also hoping that my shaving skills improve with practice. This might just be one more insignificant step, and it may appear pathetic, but it is a step none the less. It is unlikely that our politicians are going to suddenly awaken from their slumber and recognize what their constant drive towards growth is doing to this planet. For many of us, small, almost insignificant actions are the best we can offer. On its own, each tiny advance may not even cause a ripple. Multiply it a million times and we create a wave. The worst thing we can do, is to do nothing at all— — — — — —Evaluating scenarios toward zero plastic pollutionCost-effective solutions to managing plastic waste vary considerably across geographies and social settings (3), and a variety of solutions to the plastic pollution problem have been proposed at local, national, and regional levels (19, 20). Some proposed interventions focus on postconsumption management, requiring considerable growth in investment and capacity of waste management solutions (21, 22). Other interventions prioritize reducing plastic through replacement with alternative products, reuse, and the development of new delivery models (23). Individual countries have established bans or levies on select plastic products, with a particular focus on banning single-use carrier bags and microbeads in cosmetic products (24, 25). The European Union recently adopted a directive on single-use plastics (26), and the Basel Convention was amended to regulate the international trade of plastic waste (27). The scientific community and nongovernmental organizations are also working to identify solutions (21, 28). Despite these efforts, a global evidence-based strategy that includes practical and measurable interventions aimed at reducing plastic pollution does not yet exist.
Why India Should Start Making Plastic Roads
Why India Should Start Making Plastic Roads
Why India should start making plastic roadsPlastics are generally much more durable and costs very less. Due to which the production of plastic products have increased rapidly (Roughly 380 million tonnes per year). But this is not the main problem; the actual problem is the chemical structure of a plastic material that makes it less degradable by natural process making them almost non-degradable by nature. So, high production and non-degradable nature have given a rapid increase in the amount of plastics pollution in our environment. So, if you are not correctly recycling plastic, it can create a diverse effect on our nature. The pollution generated by plastic waste hinders all the natural elements present on earth humans, animals, oceans, land, etc. Due to this currently, the whole world is working together to eradicate and decrease the usage of plastic materials. Studies suggest that not even 5% out of the yearly produced plastic is recycled or destroyed. Which makes it inevitably the most dangerous pollutant in our environment. So, the only way to eradicate and the level of plastic present in our nature is by recycling it. So, here we will be telling you about a fascinating and innovative way of recycling plastic waste and using it for making roads. What are plastic roads?Plastic roads are generally roads made up of plastic or most of the time, a mixture of plastic with other components. These roads are different from the standard roads which are made from asphalt to concrete. The plastic road concept consists of a hollow and modular structure road made from a mixture of recycled plastic materials.Advantages of Roads Built out of Plastic WasteØ On the proposed model by Volker Wessels (a European construction company), by making plastic roads, we can create a hollow space built in, to allow ease of wiring, connecting pipes, which will help us a lot. Ø You can even prevent roads from heating and freezing because of the durability of plastic; it can also help in water evaporation from the surface very quickly.Ø Since plastics have more significant physical and chemical properties, it is possible to engineer them to meet more specific requirements like weather or wear resistance, etc.Ø Mixing around 8% of Plastic waste to asphalt may solve the issue of plastics in landfills oceans, lakes, and rivers worldwide. Ø By using the plastic in the construction of roads, we can reduce the amount of asphalt and limestone consumed, which is beneficial to the environment and the ecosystems, since 2% of global carbon emissions are emitted by asphalt.Ø Cost plays an important and vital role in using plastics, as using recycled, post-consumer plastics are cheaper than using asphalt.Ø Modular plastic pieces, as well as packets, are much more manageable and comfortable to work with than asphalt. Ø Using less asphalt saves on resources. Asphalt concrete requires petroleum, which is becoming scarcer, which is why it is better to use plastic instead. Why should India start making plastic roads? As you might have heard in some parts of India, the organizations have started using this as an alternative which proves to be beneficial in every possible way.· Further, we can see there is a considerable amount of plastic disposal from every home, every day. To which we have no solution for prevention. I think it is an excellent idea of using plastic for constructing roads.· Usually, concrete roads in India comprise 90% of rocks, limestone, sand, and 10% bitumen to blend it. However, it will be a great and helpful idea to implement the use of plastics. We can use them in the construction of roads. It will help our country and the ecosystem as well. · We cannot stop using plastic because everything, all the packets comes in plastic. Along with banning the usage of plastic, the government must use recycled plastic in the making and construction of roads which will eventually reduce the amount of plastic waste present in our country.· The primary objective of making plastic road is to reduce plastic waste, bags, bottles, etc. Not all plastic waste can be recycled, as even the recyclable waste is just too much to reuse fully which is why using it for construction is by far the best.Jambulingam Street is one of India's first plastic roads, and it was constructed about 15 years ago and response to the increasing problem of plastic litter. As time passed these roads prove to be durable and way more efficient than the metallic roads. Other cities such as Chennai and Bangalore are also planning to build up such roads for the proper utilization of plastic. Conclusion:In today's world, there is a rapid increase in population, which in turn increases solid waste, and one such waste is a plastic waste, which is non-biodegradable. Therefore, to use such plastic in a better way, recycled plastic can be used in road construction. Through this, we can improve the durability, flexibility, and economy of roads. Slowly and gradually we all must start looking into this, as starting the construction of plastic roads will help us in many ways, to make India a better place to live and to save our environment from being polluted to a large extent
Solving the Plastic Packaging Problem: Its Time for Industries and Governments to Play Their Part
Solving the Plastic Packaging Problem: Its Time for Industries and Governments to Play Their Part
Solving the plastic packaging problem: it’s time for industries and governments to play their partBy Wendell Chan, Project Officer, Friends of the Earth (HK) It is almost April 22nd, which means Earth Day is just around the corner. Since 1970, the annual event has raised awareness of a wide range of environmental issues. The theme for this year is to end plastic pollution, though it seems Hong Kong did not get the message. During Chinese New Year, festival goers decorated the streets with litter and turned overfilled waste bins into hills of rubbish. Among these heaps were many disposable plastic bags, bottles, and containers. Plastic waste is not a symptom unique to festivals either. Hong Kong buries over 2,100 tonnes of it in landfills daily - much of it packaging materials. Valued for its low cost, light weight, and the various properties that it can be imbued with, plastic is regarded as one of the most important inventions of the past century. Plastic packaging has transformed how food is delivered and distributed. Yet, 95 per cent of value in plastic packaging is estimated to be lost after the first use, amounting to as much as US$120 billion (HK$940 billion) of losses every year. Many disposable plastics, like films and straws, are already not disposed of properly. This has been exacerbated by China's ban on imported recyclable materials, and in Hong Kong by the new government recycling policy of accepting only code number 1 and 2 plastics. Even when they are recycled, these are notorious for recyclers as they get contaminated easily and some can jam sorting machines. Less than 15 per cent of the plastic waste we produce in Hong Kong is recycled - a bit better than the global average of 9 per cent. Some reckon doing without plastic is impossible and we should look to making plastics greener instead. Solutions include making bioplastics from corn, algae, or even food waste. Compared with their fossilised plant-based counterparts, these polymers utilise renewable resources. Some bioplastics are also biodegradable, making them useful for food packaging as they can be composted and avoid food contamination issues during recycling. But they have their problems. Like plastics, bioplastics are not a single item but a range of polymers. While bioplastics look and work like conventional plastics, they cannot be recycled together. Plant-based PLA plastics have a similar density to PET plastics, making them difficult to separate once mixed. To the public however, differentiating between #1 and #2 plastics is hard enough - let alone having to separate bioplastics and conventional plastics. Also, bioplastics are often confused with biodegradables. Not all bioplastics can biodegrade, and not all biodegradable plastics are bioplastics. Even for biodegradable bioplastics, most only break down in industrial composters. Bioplastics in the sea can be as devastating as conventional plastics. Bioplastics are not the cure-all to our appetite for plastic. Instead of just changing what we make plastics from, we can also change how we design them. We are good at engineering advanced plastic products, but rarely consider how they are handled at end-of-life. Take the black food trays used by supermarkets and restaurants for example. Black gives food items a stronger contrast. Unfortunately, it also makes the plastic trays hard to detect in traditional optical sorting machines, as the commonly-used carbon black pigments absorb infra-red light. Small pieces of plastic, such as straws, tear-offs, and wrappers, often get lost during collection and sorting. Most are too small to be filtered by machines and too costly to be sorted manually. Multilayer flexible packaging is an even bigger headache. Though touted as more sustainable because fewer resources are used to make it, it is mostly not recycled because each layer is different and has to be separated. Innovations can make it easier to recycle and reduce waste. Detectable chemical markers to identify the various plastic grades can make automated sorting easier. Packaging materials designed using a single polymer or compatible polymers can be recycled by existing machinery. Perhaps beyond all of this, we should reconsider our relationship with plastic, or more specifically, how we use it. The contribution of plastic packaging to the food industry is undeniable. It has drastically reduced the energy costs of production and transport, and extended the shelf life of perishable items. As with most things however, technology often outpaces society's ability to adapt. We have shorelines covered with plastic waste, no matter how many times they get cleaned up. What is not beached is trapped by ocean currents or in the stomachs of animals. It is estimated that the ocean will contain more plastic than fish by 2050. Plastic waste - and waste in general - is generally left for municipalities to handle. Unfortunately, this has encouraged cities to burn it. Cities have no interest in recovering resources when the goal of waste management is to keep a clean environment as cheaply as possible. The burden of managing plastic's afterlife should be placed on producers, who benefit the most from the production and consumption of plastic packaging. Japan and Taiwan, for instance, ensure producers either pay to use the local recycling infrastructure or establish their own collection routes. This encourages producers to cut down on recycling costs by including greener elements into packaging designs; and recyclers are properly funded to handle low-value scrap plastics. Governments also have responsibilities. We cannot rely solely on good will from businesses. Legislation should help drive the recovery and reuse of plastic waste and other secondary materials. The government must rethink the objectives of its regulatory framework, to enable a sustainable market and innovations in the industry. It is tempting to end with a list of what individuals can do, but just telling people to recycle more and use less plastic is not enough. Big problems sometimes require big solutions. People around the globe are demanding more responsible use of plastic. It is time for industries and governments to take action.
Opinion/Editorial: Plastic-bag Taxes Must Effect Real Change
Opinion/Editorial: Plastic-bag Taxes Must Effect Real Change
Opinion/Editorial: Plastic-bag taxes must effect real changeIn 2020, an analysis by Duke University's Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions sought to chronicle the past 20 years of government responses to lessen levels of plastic pollution. Researchers gathered almost 300 policies into a searchable database, finding single-use bags were a prime target. The scope of those policies spanned 40-plus countries, reaching 3.7 billion people. Duke's literature review was noteworthy. While policies consistently were reported as "leading to significant net reductions in use" (40%-60%), there were "unintended consequences, such as increased demand for other types of nonreusable bags." Policies tended to be "more effective when paired with public awareness or educational campaigns, a step fewer governments appeared to be taking." Some companies have taken their own steps to institute policies that are separate from government. . Especially after the lessons learned during this pandemic, the public and private sector have to work together to think more creatively beyond a nickel tax on brick-and-mortar buying or a leave-it-alone-altogether mindset. Think about how the pandemic has changed buying habits. In the past year-plus, we know that consumers leaned more heavily on goods than on services. .Changes in buying habits sparked disruptions in our plastic habits, too. This past October, Reuters published a wide-ranging special report on how the demand for everything from masks to takeout containers to bubble wrap for online shopping hindered plastic waste reduction aims. And the pandemic only aggravated the troubling statistic first projected in a 2017 study in the journal Science Advances: Since mass production of plastic began in the 1950s, only 9% of the world's 6.3 billion tons of plastic waste has been recycled.— — — — — —Public and Environmental Health Effects of Plastic Wastes Disposal: A ReviewInner linings of food cans, reusable water bottles, and baby bottles are manufactured using BPA. In 2003, an estimated global output of BPA was greater than 2.2 million metric tonnes annually . As a result of repeated usage of beverage and food containers over a long period of time, BPA molecules can leach from the plastics into the drinks and food. The process of BPA leaching from plastics is accelerated by storing acidic or basic items that can breakdown plastic polymers, exposure of the plastic container to high temperature, and by repeated washing of the plastic container [77,78]. BPA is an endocrine disruptor which mimics oestrogen in females. Women exposed to BPA have damaged health system such as polycyclic ovarian syndrome, obesity, recurrent miscarriages, endometrial hyperplasia and sterility [79-81]. BPA alters thyroid hormone axis gene expression, thereby altering its biological functions like metabolism and development. Also, BPA increases thyroid hormone receptor transcriptional corepressor activity causing a decreasing in thyroid hormone receptor activity. This alteration to thyroid axis causes hypothyroidism . Exposure of children and women of reproductive age to elevated concentration of BPA is of great public health concern because of the higher vulnerability of children and developing foetus to BPA compared to adults exposed to similar concentration . Studies have reported a strong association between the concentration of urinary BPA and liver enzyme abnormalities, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes . Also, BPA associated neuro-behavioural disorders (e.g. autism),male's abnormal urethra/penile development, female early sexual maturation and increase in hormonally-mediated cancers (e.g. breast and prostate cancers) have been reported [85-87].— — — — — —Europe’s Drive to Slash Plastic Waste Moves Into High GearEurope's battle against plastic waste will help the EU reach its ambitious climate target of slashing greenhouse emissions by 55 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. The EU estimates that the drop in oil-based plastics production could shave 3.4 million tons of CO -equivalent off Europe's carbon footprint and pre-empt environmental damages that would run to 22 billion euros by 2030. "The 10-items ban is big. It's not greenwashing," said Clara Löw, an analyst at the Öko-Institute, a German think tank. "There are many more measures afoot within the European Green Deal to rein in plastics and establish circularity as the cornerstone principle of Europe's plastics economy. Even most Europeans are not aware of how much is happening right now." Critics note, however, that the EU's showy 10-item ban covers just one percent of Europe's plastic production. They also point out that the total quantity of plastic waste generation in Europe has not fallen - something the new measures aim to reverse. Zero Waste Europe says that plastic waste generation in Europe will drop only when sanctions like the 10-items ban and other measures take full effect. Carmine Trecroci, an economist and recycling expert at the University of Brescia in Italy, said that external factors like the price of oil have a major impact; as long as oil is cheap, which it has been in recent years, so too is plastics production, making it all the harder to rein in. The plastics sector in the EU is big business, employing 1.5 million people and generating 350 billion euros in 2019. Trecroci said the powerful Italian plastics lobby fought fiercely to block the 10-item ban, and then to slow and dilute it. In the end, however, the EU approved the ban.

Design Scheme of Multi-channel Voltage Measurement Based on Stm32
Design Scheme of Multi-channel Voltage Measurement Based on Stm32
This design proposes a design scheme of multi-channel voltage measurement based on STM32 chip, and the measurement range is between 0-10V. The built-in A / D of STM32 samples the multi-channel voltage values to obtain the corresponding digital quantity. Then the corresponding analog voltage value is obtained according to the proportional relationship between digital quantity and analog quantity, which is displayed by TFTLCD display equipment, and the multi-channel collected data is stored in SD card.1. IntroductionIn recent years, data acquisition and its application have attracted more and more attention, and data acquisition system has developed rapidly. It can be widely used in various fields.Data acquisition technology is one of the important branches of information science. Data acquisition is also a process of obtaining object information from one or more signals. Data acquisition is an important link in industrial control systems. It is usually realized by some single chip microcomputer systems with relatively independent functions. As an indispensable part of the measurement and control system, the performance characteristics of data acquisition directly affect the whole system.Voltage measurement is the most universal. It is of great significance to study and design methods and instruments to improve voltage measurement accuracy. In the design of voltage measurement, single chip microcomputer as controller is the core of the whole design. In addition, there must be an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) in the design. ADC is used to directly collect analog voltage and convert analog signal into digital signal. It directly affects the accuracy and speed of data acquisition.2. System overviewThe microcontroller of this design adopts STM32 single chip microcomputer.STM32 Series MCU is designed based on the Cortex-M3 core of arm company. Its clock frequency reaches 72mhz. It is a high-performance product among similar products. It has the advantages of high performance, low cost and low power consumption. It is a good choice in embedded application design. The A / D converter in the design adopts STM32 built-in ADC. STM32 ADC is a 12 bit successive approximation analog-to-digital converter. It has up to 18 channels and can measure 16 external and 2 internal signal sources. The A / D conversion of each channel can be performed in single, continuous, scanning or intermittent mode. The conversion results can be stored in the 16 bit data register in left or right alignment. The maximum input clock can reach 14mhzThis design can measure the voltage value of 8 channels, the measurement range is 0-10V, and the display error is ± 0.001V. LCD displays the voltage value and waveform in real time, and microSD card synchronously stores the data. The system principle block diagram is shown in Figure 1.Design scheme of multi-channel voltage measurement based on stm323.3 LCD control circuitThe LCD used in this design is 2.4 inches, 320 & times; 240 resolution. The LCD module is controlled by the FSMC interface of STM32.FSMC (flexible static memory controller) can be changed into static storage controller. It is a unique storage control mechanism of STM32 series high storage density microcontroller with internal integration of flash of more than 256Kb and suffixes Xc, XD and Xe. By setting the special function register, FSMC can send corresponding data / address / control signal types according to different external memory types to match the speed of the signal, so that STM32 series microcontrollers can not only apply various external static memories of different types and speeds, Moreover, it can expand a variety of different types of static memory without adding external devices, so as to meet the comprehensive requirements of system design for storage capacity, product volume and cost.In STM32, one end of FSMC is connected to core Cortex-M3 through internal high-speed bus AHB, and the other end is an external bus for extended memory. After the access signal of the kernel to the external memory is sent to the AHB bus, it is converted into a signal conforming to the communication protocol of the external memory through the FSMC and sent to the corresponding pin of the external memory to realize the data interaction between the kernel and the external memory. FSMC acts as a bridge, which can not only convert the signal type, but also adjust the signal width and timing, so as to shield the differences of different storage types and make them no difference to the kernel.FSMC can connect devices such as nor / PSRAM / NAND / PC card, and has FSMC_ A [25:0] has 26 address buses and FSMC [15:0] has 16 data buses. In addition, the extended storage space of FSMC is divided into 8 blocks. Select the block of the operation through the address line. In this way, the LCD will operate as a memory with one address space.3.4 SD card drive circuitThe SD card used in this design is microSD, also known as TF card. MicroSD card is a very small flash memory card, which is mainly used in mobile phones. However, due to its small volume and the continuous improvement of storage capacity, it has been used in GPS devices, portable music players, digital cameras and some flash memory disks. The pin diagram of microSD card is shown in Figure 9.MicroSD card, like SD card, has SPI and SDIO operation buses. Compared with SDIO bus, SPI bus has simple interface, but its speed is slow. We use SDIO mode.MicroSD card has 4 data lines in SDIO mode.In fact, microSD has 1-wire mode and 4-wire mode in SDIO mode, that is, 1 or 4 data lines are used respectively. Of course, the speed of 4-wire mode is faster than that of 1-wire mode, but the operation is more complex. The 4-wire mode of SDIO is used in this design. The hardware connection diagram of microSD card is shown in Figure 3.STM32 MCU Chinese official websiteSTMicroelectronics / St / STM
How Does Temperature Affect the Speed of Sound?
How Does Temperature Affect the Speed of Sound?
As other answers show, the speed of sound is slightly influenced by temperature.Much more interesting is the influence of gradients in temperature! The usual distribution of temperature at different heights is: high at ground level, decreasing upwards. This profile, with slightly higher sound velocity at ground level causes wave fronts to curve upwards. Sometimes the temperature profile is inverse, from ground level to a certain height, in the order of hundreds of meters. This inversion layer acts as a reflector, causing sound to propagate over much larger distances. It is not the speed as such, but the differences in speed that have important influence on sound propagation.1. How to increase my running speed? No, leaping prime does now not make you a quicker runner. Speed is muscular so you will do whole frame paintings along side plyometrics, which can be exceptional varieties of bounding and leaping to construct explosive force. To get greater at going for walks you ought to run. If you are employed on lifting and doing the plyometrics you are going to have the groundwork to upgrade your going for walks. What form of going for walks are you running for? If it's soccer then you definitely will have to coach for brief bursts of velocity. If it's one other game you have got to appear on the distances required on your game. A huge aspect of velocity it response. That manner the begin. Whether it's out of the blocks in a race, or attending to a fly ball within the outfield. Speed is vigor so that you ought to be ready to loosen up rise up tall, maintain your elbows at ninety levels, swing them directly entrance to again, and now not throughout your frame. Land at the balls of your ft.2. Water flows through a 1.5 cm diameter pipe into a 275 liter bathtub, which it fills in 5 minutes. What is the speed of the water in the pipe?Mass of 275 litres of Water divided by 5 minutes x 60 seconds = Time of 300 secondsMass Flow Rate of 0.9166 litres per secondThis is excessive amount of water in Speed or Velocity to fill a bathtub in 300 seconds. See IPHE & CIBSE CoP & Technical Guidance on maximum flow rate for 15 mm smooth wall copper pipework. The water pressure is another factor is consider.Water flows through a 1.5 cm diameter pipe into a 275 liter bathtub, which it fills in 5 minutes. What is the speed of the water in the pipe?.3. Not getting the download speed I should be getting?you download a file to what ? a phone or a computer? ethernet or wirelessly ? you need to be more clear on how to ask a question, even with my godlike powers i cant read your mind4. Need help gaining speed/trimming fat?challenging task. browse in google. that will may help!5. Why are people so insistent that speed of light is constant for all observers and is the maximum traveling speed? In special relativity, when the speed of light is constant for everyone, time can be different. When different travellers or observers have light remain constant, their time can change to allow for this. So try to wrap your head around the fact that different observers can have differences in time, and this allows the speed of light to remain constant for all observers.6. fur nice fan motor Polly have to be smaller to make the fan go faster?Motor pulley larger or driven pulley smaller will increase speed7. What are the technical factors in a processor that determine its speed?Clock Speed of the Processor and its primary cache size determines its speed in terms of throughput8. Is faster than the speed of light possible?well ist just a theory so it could be or couldnt be true.....einstien said if we could go the speed of light then we cold time travel...other people say it is still expanding....what i want to know is how can all of that crap fit into somthing the size of a pin head lol.9. How to train for faster picking speed on guitar?Assuming we are talking about alternate picking, there are basically two exercise methods for building speed. The first and the better known one is to start slow. Set your metronome to a comfortable tempo and play the exercise a few times. Then go up 2 bpms or so and repeat. Continue alternating between plus two and minus one. Back down some 10 bpm when you hit your limit and work your way up from there again. You can go up 10 bpm or so from time to time just to see how it feels. The second one is to practice in bursts. Start with two notes and play as fast as you can. Then add the third and continue from there. This method is not as well known as the first one but is every bit as useful. You can also start from the most difficult spot on the exercise and add notes on both sides.Practicing scales only is probably not the best way to go. There are specially crafted exercise sets to build speed that isolate common patterns. Troy Stetina's book Speed Mechanics contains one such set.In terms of technique, on your left hand, only apply enough pressure to avoid buzz. You will get tired very quickly if you exert more force than necessary. The lighter your left hand touch is, the easier it is to play fast. It's easier said than done but that's the whole idea of practicing. On your right hand, I would not worry that much about wrist vs. elbow unless you are aiming for Guiness speed record. Wrist movement is probably a bit better but there's nothing wrong with a combination of wrist and elbow. Guitarists argue about it all the time but there are superb guitarists in both camps which proves that both techniques are equally viable. Just avoid finger movement, it does not work for fast playing

I'm not entirely sure what WiFi is?Have a look at the wikipedia article. Usually you would get a DSL connection and set up your wireless network at home. The wireless network connection is also called W-LAN or WiFi, but in this context, WiFi has nothing to do with the ISP. Not sure if in your region any provider sells internet acces via WiFi, this is not a common thing to do.9. What is wifi and what does it do for a phone? If you have internet at home and have a wireless router you can connect wirelessly to it and get on the internet etc. on your phone. Hope this helps!10. 802.11 standards compliant methods of forming a LAN. Unlike Ethernet, data does not travel along a cable, but rather, wirelessly, at a frequency of 2.4GHz (802.11b/g) or 5.0GHz (802.11n and the antiquated 802.11a)11. What is "WiFi" and can you explain ,more about it? I'm GOnna buy a laptop.?well if you want wifi in your home you have to have an internet connection threw a modem..ex comcast, qwest, at&t. you will need to purchase a wireless router, its just another device that hooks into your modem. so no it is not free, but it is a one time charge because your ISP will not charge you to have the wireless router hooked up...and where you can use it is in your home. you can also connect to wifi at places like starbucks, and that is free as well.12. What WiFi router brands or models are considered to be secure? [closed]For cheap solution I use a wifi router well supported by dd-wrt alternative firmware. Here you can find supported models database. For more advanced, trouble-safe solution I use Ubiquiti UniFi - the AC-Lite model is really good.13. What is a bluetooth? what is WIFI? And what is a BLU RAY DVD?Bluetooth is a wireless technology for connecting electronic devices to each other. For instance there are Bluetooth Headphones, Bluetooth Cell Phone Ear Pieces, etc... If you want to be able to use the Bluetooth Ear Pieces with your cellphone, your cellphone must be Bluetooth compatible. WiFi is a method of connecting to the internet wirelessly. For instance many big cities may have "WiFi Hotspots". If you are in these WiFi Hotspots and you have your laptop or any other device that can connect to the internet wirelessly, you can surf the web wirelessly as long as you are in that particular area. And Blu-Ray is Sony's High Definition format disc. The difference between Blu-Ray and Regular DVD is that Blu-Ray can produce 1080p HD quality picture and Blu-Ray can hold more data. A Single Layer Blu-Ray disc can hold 25GB and a Dual Layer DVD can hold 50GB. A standard DVD can only hold around 8.5GB total. Basically if you have a HDTV, Blu-Ray would be the best choice for getting the best picture quality with clear, crisp viewing quality.
