Planar TV 3D imaging has gradually become another trend of TV development. This paper will briefly introduce the principle, advantages and disadvantages of glasses wearing planar 3D display.

The principle of shutter plane 3D is to use the glasses made of liquid crystal. The two glasses are alternately controlled on the two glasses, so that the two glasses are alternately transparent and opaque. The display shows the left eye image and the right eye image alternately, that is, when the left eye image is displayed on the display screen, the left lens is transparent and the right lens is opaque, so that only the left eye can see the image; When the right eye image is displayed on the display screen, the right lens is transparent and the left lens is opaque, so that only the right eye can see the image, so switch repeatedly. When the switching frequency reaches 50 times a second, the brain will think it is watching at the same time and fuse them into a stereo image.

Various displays display multiple images within 1 second to represent the motion process. This makes use of the visual persistence of the human eye, because the human eye needs time to process image information. Suppose a bulb flashes alternately bright and dark. When the flashing speed is slow, you will see the flashing bulb clearly; When the flicker frequency increases to a certain extent, the human eye will not detect intermittent flicker, but a fixed brightness light. This frequency is called the critical flicker frequency. Generally, there is no flicker when it reaches 30-50 times per second. In addition, the critical flicker frequency value increases with the increase of light intensity. When the light is very weak, the flicker frequency can be reduced to 5Hz and will increase to about 50Hz under high light intensity, that is, in a dark environment, the bulb will flicker more than 5 times in one second, the human eye will see a constant luminous bulb, and the bulb will be found flickering in a brighter environment.

However, as long as the flicker frequency is greater than 60Hz, regardless of the light intensity, the brain will think of it as a fused constant image. In traditional film projection, the film projector projects 24 images per second. Because there will be a dark field when two pictures are switched, the human eye will feel unbearable flicker in the environment of large screen brightness. Therefore, the leaf plate is used to block the middle of each picture display, so that the same picture appears twice, which increases the switching frequency of the film to 48 times, so as to eliminate the flicker phenomenon in the process of projection.

Modern digital projection is a similar idea, which only makes the same image reappear three times during the display period, greatly improving the switching frequency. Therefore, in a brighter screen environment, the human eye still feels that the film is continuous and integrated. The electronic shutter technology just introduced makes use of the visual persistence characteristics of human eyes, so there is no need for projection equipment to specially transform for 3D images, and this technology can be introduced only by switching the frequency.

However, the most serious disadvantage of the active electronic shutter is the serious loss of brightness. In fact, each eye can only see about 2 / 10 of the light displayed in 2D. Due to the low brightness, the contrast and color display of the picture will be greatly reduced, which will affect the image quality of 3D picture. On the other hand, because the electronic shutter glasses worn have batteries and switching circuits, they will inevitably be restricted by factors such as price and weight. The long-term wearing and watching of the audience will also produce brain and eye fatigue due to the unavoidable binocular crossing effect.

The principle of polarized 3D is to wear a pair of polarizers with mutually perpendicular directions. One lens is a horizontal polarizer and the other is a vertical polarizer. It is assumed that when shooting, the picture seen by the left eye is horizontally polarized light and the right eye is vertically polarized light. The display screen shows images containing two polarization states at the same time. Due to the filtering of the polarizer, The left eye receives a horizontally polarized image with only left eye information, and the right eye receives a vertically polarized image with only right eye information. The brain processes and fuses the two images to form stereo vision.

This method is similar to the electronic shutter type, in which two cameras are staggered at a small angle to simulate human vision, the signals are mixed and transmitted to the display screen, and then the images of the left and right eyes are sent to the left and right eyes respectively. Polarized 3D technology needs high cost to be realized on TV, and there are limitations in viewing angle and display area. However, polarizer glasses are widely used in cinemas because of their low cost. Planar 3D display in addition to the above two glasses technology, there is also naked eye 3D.

The newly developed naked eye 3D technology includes multi-layer display MLD, depth of field fusion DFD, scanning backlight stereo display technology, scanning volume display and solid volume display, which are all in development. The biggest advantage of naked eye 3D display technology is to get rid of the shackles of glasses, but now the effect applied to large-size screens is not ideal. There will be obvious vertical shadows when looking close, and the 3D effect is not obvious. Now digital holographic 3D technology is the best 3D display technology, but the amount of data to be processed is too large to be used in 3D TV. Of course, there are many new 3D display technologies explored at the forefront of technology, such as integrated imaging 3D display, which may be a new hope for realizing naked eye real 3D display in the future.
